The story behind the work

Narrative Film & Documentary Production in San Diego

Some stories deserve more than 30 seconds.

Not every story is trying to sell you something. Some are trying to tell you something. Make you feel something. Maybe even change the way you see the world.

Those are the stories we love telling.

I Don't Know Studios is a San Diego film production company creating original short films, documentaries, and cinematic storytelling for nonprofits, churches, organizations, and independent filmmakers.

We believe a powerful story can communicate an idea in ways that a traditional advertisement simply can't. Sometimes it takes a character, a conflict, and a carefully crafted ending to make a message stick.

Whether it's a documentary about a real person's journey, a short film inspired by a meaningful idea, or an emotionally driven piece for an organization, we approach every production with the same goal: make something worth sitting still for.

What We Make

Our narrative and short film production services cover both scripted and unscripted storytelling.

  • Narrative short films: Original scripted films with characters, dialogue, cinematic visuals, and compelling storylines.
  • Documentaries: Real stories told through interviews, observational footage, and thoughtful visual storytelling.
  • Nonprofit video production: Mission-driven films that communicate impact, build awareness, encourage giving, and inspire action.
  • Faith-based films: Story-driven productions for churches, ministries, teaching series, seasonal events, and special presentations.
  • Testimonial and impact films: Personal stories that bring an organization's work and purpose to life.
  • Creative collaborations: Production partnerships with writers, directors, organizations, and other filmmakers bringing original stories to the screen.

Our narrative work includes original films such as Do Not Fear, The Gift, and Heart of Snow. We've also collaborated on projects for churches, educational organizations, and mission-driven groups.

We understand that not every story needs a giant production to make an impact. Sometimes the most powerful moment happens when the camera gets out of the way and someone tells the truth.

Other times, it takes a cast, a crew, and a little movie magic.

We happen to like both.

From the First Idea to the Final Frame

Making a film is a collaborative process, and we can be involved from the earliest creative conversations through the finished production.

Depending on the project's scope, our work includes concept development, screenwriting or interview preparation, storyboarding, casting coordination, location planning, production scheduling, cinematography, professional lighting, location sound recording, editing, color grading, sound design, and final delivery.

For documentary projects, that might mean conducting interviews, capturing supporting footage, and carefully constructing the story in post-production.

For scripted films, it can mean developing the screenplay, assembling the right crew, planning scenes, directing performances, and building an entire visual world around the story.

Different approaches. Same commitment to the craft.

How It Works

  1. We discover the story. We talk about the message, audience, characters, and emotional impact you're hoping to create.
  2. We develop the concept. We shape the narrative, script or documentary outline, visual direction, production requirements, and schedule.
  3. We bring it to life. Our crew handles the filmmaking, from interviews and real-world storytelling to directed scenes with actors.
  4. We find the film in the edit. We assemble the story, refine the pacing, mix the sound, and carefully color grade the picture.
  5. We prepare it for the world. We deliver the completed film and any agreed-upon trailers, promotional clips, or alternate versions for screenings, websites, events, and social platforms.

Timeline & Investment

Smaller documentary and nonprofit video projects may be completed in two weeks or less after filming. Scripted short films and more involved documentaries generally require longer timelines for development, production, and post-production.

Commissioned narrative and nonprofit video projects typically start at $5,000, with many ranging up to approximately $20,000 or more depending on story complexity, filming days, locations, crew, editing, scheduling, and travel.

Larger scripted productions may require a separately developed budget.

Have a Story Worth Telling?

We don't pretend to have all the answers. That's kind of in the name.

But we do know what a powerful story can do.

Tell us what you're dreaming up. Let's see where it takes us.

Before we roll

A few good questions.

How much does it cost?

What’s your budget? We’ll work with you to find a price that works and doesn’t break the bank. We operate with a small crew, not a big intrusive production company. Shoot us a message about your project, and we’ll send you a free quote.

How long does it take?

Not as fast as Nicolas Cage in ‘Gone in 60 Seconds,’ but pretty fast. We usually turn around the first video concept within two weeks after filming it.

Do you write the concept?

If only we could read and write. In all seriousness, we work with you to find what makes your story stand out and shine a light on it. We’ll draft a concept and submit a free proposal with our ideas.

Do I get vertical versions for Instagram and TikTok?

Is your TV vertical at home? Do you watch sunsets through a door frame? Just kidding, we’ll talk about it.

Who owns the final video?

Didn’t you pay for it? You own it, we’d love to show it off, though.

Do you work outside San Diego?

Do birds migrate in the winter? Of course we do… We’ve done projects in San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Rosa, Chicago, Arizona, Texas, Montana, just to name a few…

You got a story?We got a camera.
